Herb Profile: Skullcap

Skullcap, Scutellaria lateriflora

Skullcap is one of the most versatile nervines and is useful for all nervous system disorders, including headaches, nerve tremors, stress, menstrual tension, insomnia and nervous exhaustion. Skullcap soothes the irritability of the nervous system and calms the overly excited mind.

To receive the full benefit of skullcap, you should use it over an extended period and in adequate doses. Skullcap can be prepared in tea, tincture or capsule form.

The dose is 2 to 3 cups of tea daily or 1/4 teaspoon of tincture diluted in 1/2 cup of warm water three times daily.

We use all of the aerial parts when making medicine.

Preparations

Skullcap makes an excellent calmative nervine tea or tincture. For a delicious soothing tea, try combining skullcap with other calmative nervines such as tulsi, oats, lemon balm and rose.

Skullcap Headache Blend (from Rosemary Gladstar’s Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health)

Combine 2 parts lemon balm, 2 parts skullcap, 1 part chamomile and 1 part feverfew and prepare as an infusion (steep for 30-60 minutes). Drink at least 1/4 cup every 30 minutes until the headache symptoms are gone.
